The Chattanooga Section of the American Chemical Society held the qualifying exams for seven outstanding local chemistry students this past Saturday at UTC. The students participating were the high scorers on the local exam, and now may become members of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad team that will compete in the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad in Washington D.C. July 19-30.
The students are Sasha Allen (McCallie), David Samuels (McCallie), Kate Westman (Notre Dame), Andrew Thomas (Notre Dame), Chris Cunningham (Hixson), Gabrielle Snyder (Ridgeland), Kelly English (Hixson).
The local nominees are among over 1,200 nationwide that took the qualifying exam last weekend. Twenty students will be identified and will undergo intensive training June 5-20 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. The top four will be chose to represent the U.S. in the 44th IChO competition.
