Anne-Marie McDermott
String Theory, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will continue its seventh season with a concert on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m., featuring an all-Haydn recital by pianist Anne-Marie McDermott.
String Theory, founded in 2009 by pianist and Artistic Director Gloria Chien, brings acclaimed chamber musicians from around the world to perform in the intimate setting of the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga.
The “Musical Dialogues” will be led by well-known Chattanooga musician, Deanne Irvine, and will take place at 6 p.m. from the concert stage. The dialogue will feature a conversation with Ms. McDermott on her life, inspirations, and the masterpieces being performed at the concert.

Hailed as “one of the great American pianists of her generation” (The Philadelphia Inquirer), Ms. McDermott performs over 100 concerts a year in a combination of solo recitals, concerti, and chamber music. Her eclectic choices span from Bach and Haydn to Prokofiev and Scriabin to Kernis, Hartke, Tower and Wuorinen. She has performed with many leading orchestras in the United States and abroad and has toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi.
Ms. McDermott is artistic director of the Vail Valley Music Festival, the Ocean Reef Chamber Music Festival, and the Avila Chamber Music Celebration. She is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and tours with them each season. In 2009, she commissioned works of Charles Wuorinen and Clarice Assad which were premiered at Town Hall, in conjunction with Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
Ms. McDermott continues a long-standing collaboration with the highly acclaimed violinist, Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, and is a member of the renowned piano quartet Opus One. She continues to perform each season with her sisters, Mauren McDermott and Kerry McDermott in the McDermott Trio. A winner of the Young Concert Artists auditions and a winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, Ms. McDermott regularly performs at festivals throughout the United States and in Puerto Rico.
Individual concert tickets are $30 for Hunter members, $40 for non-members, $10 for students with a valid student ID and $25 for groups of 20 or more people. Season subscriptions are available for $160 for Hunter members and $210 for non-members.
