Carrie Elizabeth “Liz” Morton, 94, of Hixson, died peacefully and was surrounded by love on Wednesday, December 16, 2015.

She was born in Roda, Va., on May 14, 1921 to the late Reverend and Mrs. E. L. McConnell. Liz graduated from Appalachia High School in Appalachia, Va., and earned her teaching degree from Radford College.  She taught in Virginia, Maryland, and Tennessee in the public schools for 35 years. Liz made her home in Hixson in 1963 and retired from Hamilton County School Systems. After retirement Liz was a librarian at Chattanooga State Community College and then was at Grace Academy of Chattanooga for 15 years. She was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church, Sam P. McConnell Sunday School Class, and the XYZ group at the church. Liz was a member of the Hixson Order of the Eastern Star, Sam P. McConnell American Legion Auxiliary Post # 159, the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Sorority, and the Freedom Foundation. She enjoyed being a resident of Morning Pointe in Hixson and Powell, Tn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred C. Morton; daughter, Laura Beth Morton; siblings, Enoch McConnell, Sam P. McConnell, Billie Sue Hurst, Ruth Fisher and Dot Mann.

Liz is survived by her son, “Skip” Morton, Jr. of Winchester, Kentucky; daughter and son-in-law, Robin Morton Lowhorn and Gary of Luttrell, Tennessee; grandchildren, Luke Morton, Sean Dylan Morton and Jennifer Judy and husband Wally; great grandchildren, Scarlett Fiona, Cole Hunter Judy and Ty Alan Judy; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Jack B. and Mary Ellen McConnell, Hilton Head, SC; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life Service for Liz will follow at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Reed Shell and Reverend Paul Longmire officiating.

Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Chattanooga Memorial Park with Reverend Paul Longmire reading scriptures and prayers followed by Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Liz’s name to the McConnell Scholarship Fund at Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Hixson, Tn. 37343.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
