Lady Mocs Volleyball Picked Fifth In Preseason Poll

  • Wednesday, August 19, 2015
The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team is represented on the preseason All-Southern Conference Team with junior Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.), the league annoucned. UTC was picked fifth in the preseason poll for the SoCon title.

"I am happy for Kristy and her recognition," head coach Travis Filar stated. "She was a very confident, go-to attacker for us last year, and we look for her to be that for us again this fall."

The preseason all-conference team included eight players from five schools, voted on by all nine of the league's coaches.

Wieser was the only right-side hitter on the list.

Wieser transferred to UTC for the 2014 season and made a big impact right away. As a starter for all 32 matches, she led the Mocs with kills (296) and points (350.5) last season.

She posted 10 or more kills in a match 14 times, and 10 or more points on 18 occasions. Her best performance was at home against Mercer, recording her highest marks of 18 kills and 20 points.

In addition, Wieser ranked second amongst the team on digs, posting 245, and third on the squad for blocks, with 58.

As a team, Chattanooga beat out Western Carolina, Mercer, Wofford and The Citadel in the poll. Samford and Furman tied as co-favorites, followed by UNCG and ETSU.

"Pre-season polls are all of our league coaches' opinions on how last year finished and attempting to predict what will happen this year without seeing any team or student-athlete yet," Filar said. "We are a very different team this season, with a different mentality and an extremely committed group from 1 to 16. We have one goal in mind, so it will be exciting to see how this season plays out."

The Mocs open the season against Valparaiso in the Chattanooga Classic Presented by the Hampton Inn & Suites in Downtown Chattanooga August 28 at 6 p.m., in Maclellan Gym. Admission is free.
