About the film:
The Russian film "The Carnival Night" depicts a hilarious clash of the Soviet youth culture with the squarish state on the eve of the New Year.
A last-minute regime change at the Economics Institute suddenly pits a night of jazz, dancing, singing, and magic tricks against the more subdued entertainment (such as reading the annual progress reports backed by classical music) endorsed by the school administration.
Ugh.
The students must all team up to prevent their new institute director, Comrade Ogurtsov, from ever reaching that podium and putting them all to sleep. Meanwhile, the New Year's merriment must go on.
The film marked the 1956 debut of famed director Eldar Ryazanov and features popular Russian comedian Igor Ilyinsky. The film is traditionally shown on Russian television at the beginning of the New Year.
