Chattanooga Celebrates 9th Park(ing) Day

  • Thursday, September 1, 2016
To celebrate Chattanooga’s 9th Park(ing) Day, metered parking spots will once again become mini-parks for the day of Friday, Sept. 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

River City Company invites any civic groups, businesses and individuals to participate in this free event by creating a temporary mini-park filled with interaction, conversation and fun.

"Park(ing) Day is way for the community to create more public space for a day and really showcase how precious this shared open space in our downtown is,” said Amy Donahue, director of Marketing and Communication for River City Company.
“This event is a great way to exhibit the creative, unique and inspiring people who live, work and play in our city.”

In 2015, 60 parklets were created. Parklets included yoga classes, carnival games, jam sessions, theatrical performances, dance performances, live drawing, poetry readings, co-working space, a makeup booth, a massage station, dart matches, a puppy petting park and more.

“Community and interaction are two great words to describe my experience in creating a parklet last year for Park(ing) Day,” said Dr. Becky Klein, chiropractor and co-Owner of Inspire Chiropractic on East Main Street. “Providing fun games and activities for everyone, we were able to interact with lots of new people and get to know other business owners all in one spot. Park(ing) Day sparked great conversation and interaction with community members I might not have had the chance to engage with before.”

Park(er)s with their respective parklet ideas are required to register prior to the day’s event through River City Company, and the registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 7. To register, call River City Company at 423-265-3700 with your name, organization (if applicable), phone number and planned activity or fill out the Park(ing) Day Participant Form online at www.rivercitycompany.com.
