Boyd Buchanan Hires Two New Wrestling Coaches

  • Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Boyd Buchanan School recently hired Mike Sutherland and Blake Sutherland to lead their secondary wrestling program. Mike Sutherland will coach the high school wrestling team, and Blake Sutherland will lead the middle school wrestlers.

“Boyd Buchanan wrestling has experienced promising momentum in recent years with over 25 wrestlers in the secondary and historical success of performing well at the Regional and State levels, says Tommy Brown,” athletic director for Boyd Buchanan.

“The addition of Mike and Blake Sutherland are the right building blocks to help mentor our wrestlers to more victories,” Brown adds.

Coach Mike Sutherland has 35 years of wrestling experience, from athlete to coach. His 20 years of coaching includes all levels of students; youth, middle school, club teams and private instruction with high school wrestlers.

Sutherland has led individuals to 25+ state titles, 8 out of the last 10 AAU wrestling titles and 7 state dual titles consecutively.

In addition to his coaching success, Coach Sutherland has served in numerous organizational and leadership positions in various sport governing bodies. He is currently the regional director and Operations Director for Tennessee AAU wrestling and the Tennessee AAU National Team Coach, placing as high as 4th in the nation. His son, Blake, joins BBS as the Middle School Coach.

Coach Blake Sutherland brings 18 years of youth through collegiate competitor wrestling experience. He is a multi-time youth and middle school state champion, as well as a 4X high school state placer and 2X state champion.

As an All-American wrestler, Blake received the TSSAA DII 2015 Most Outstanding Wrestler, was team captain, and won 2 team state dual titles. He also finished 4th in the nation in Prep Nationals All American, while competing for the Baylor School before advancing to Old Dominion University where he wrestled for 2 years.

“I am thrilled to be at Boyd Buchanan to coach the wrestlers and direct the strength and conditioning for not only middle school and high school wrestling teams,” says Blake Sutherland, BBS Middle School Wrestling Coach. “I have assisted with club teams, instructed private lessons, led camps for elite wrestlers of all ages for the past 5 years, so it is a good fit for me and we have already gotten to work,” Coach Blake Sutherland adds.
