Lady Scots Win In PK's To Advance To Conference Championship

  • Friday, November 8, 2019
The Covenant women's soccer team is advanced to the USA South Tournament championship for the first time in program history, after defeating Greensboro, 3-1, in penalty kicks, after playing to a 0-0, draw through two overtimes on Friday evening.

The Lady Scots are now 2-0 in shootouts in the USA South tournament with their other win coming back in 2017 over Piedmont.

Lucy Sandhoff came up big for Covenant (10-5-3) posting a career-high 13 saves in regulation and the overtime periods.

Despite being outshot 22-3 in regulation the Lady Scots forced overtime.

Greensboro had their opportunities in the overtime periods as well outshooting Covenant 10-3, forcing Sandhoff to come up with four saves to keep it even.

With it still tied after two overtimes the teams went to a shootout.

In the shootout, Covenant went first with Addy Cronan taking the first kick from the spot.
Cronan fired it in to give the Lady Scots a, 1-0, advantage. The Pride converted to equalize, and that brought up Paige Simons who sent it right down the middle to take a 2-1 lead.

Sandhoff then made a save on her knees to keep it 2-1, and give Kyra Duble an opportunity to stretch the lead. Duble converted in the upper left corner and Greensboro (13-4-2) hit the post.

Lizzy Hightower had her kick saved, but Sandhoff gave the Lady Scots the win with a save to advance on penalties, 3-1.

Kelsey Emrich got the start in goal for the Pride stopping all five shots on goal she faced.

Greensboro had a 12-0 edge in corner kicks, and 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Simons led the Scots with three shots, all on-target, while Cronan and Burrell had one each. Hightower was able to get one shot off, but it went wide.

Anna Rae Porcelli led Greensboro with eight total shots. Natalie Habich paced the Pride with four of her seven shots on goal.
