The John Sevier Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution conducted a “Reflagging” ceremony Wednesday, honoring Revolutionary War veteran Maj James Cozby in recognition of his service during the Battle of Kings Mountain on the 240th Anniversary of the Battle.
John Sevier Chapter members led by Chapter President George Ison, Tim Adams, Joel Davenport, Cliff Kent and Charles Dammann rendered honors to the retiring flag, the newly posted flag and the Patriot.
The short ceremony was conducted at the Cozby family gravesite in the Pitt Cemetery next to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Falling Waters, Tn.
Major James Cozby was the surgeon for Colonel John Sevier’s Washington District Regiment which fought in part at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The battle was a military engagement between Patriot and Loyalist militias during the Southern Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. The battle took place on Oct. 7, 1780 with the Patriot militia defeating the Loyalist commanded by British Major Patrick Ferguson. The battle has been described by some historians as "the war’s largest all-American fight".
The Patriots caught and surprised the Loyalists at Kings Mountain inflicting heavy casualties in an hour of battle. The battle proved to be a pivotal moment in the Southern campaign greatly raising Patriot morale, destroying the area’s Loyalist militia and forcing Lord Cornwallis’s to abandon his planned invasion of North Carolina retreating back into South Carolina.
The Sons of the American Revolution is a national patriotic, historical and educational society whose members are direct descendants of the patriots who won our independence.
