Doris J. Dunn Yates, 80 of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 30, 2020, after she lost her battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (scarring in the lungs).

She was born Dec. 30, 1939, in Knoxville, Tn., to a single Mother, Lillie B. Dunn.  Doris was an only child.  When Doris was eight years old, her mother married Louis M. Kain.  He moved them to Washington DC.  He did not adopt Doris but was, thoroughly, a good Dad to her.  When time came for Doris' age group to start school, they discovered she had a slight heart problem.  It was bad enough to keep her out of school and her loving, caring mother, whom Doris loved very much, nursed her so she was able to start school the next year.  Several years later God healed her heart completely.  Doris' grandmother, Janettie A. Henderson, lived with them during Doris' growing up years.  She credits her grandmother with partly raising and training her.

When Doris was 11, the family moved to Maryland and lived there two years.  The family, then, moved back to Washington DC where Doris went to Kramer Jr High School and Anacostia High School.  They were members of Anacostia Baptist Church located in the SE portion of Washington DC.  That church is where she and Lee were married on March 19, 1960.  Doris and Lee located to Knoxville after he left the US Navy.  Just about immediately Doris started working with kids at Woodlawn Assembly of God there.  She learned the deaf sign language so she could teach both deaf and hearing children.  She would pick up kids from the TN School for the Deaf to take to her class at church.

Doris and Lee were married 60 years but had no biological children. In 2000, they adopted Michael's and Tabatha's mother, the late Lisa G. Iacino, a devoted and loving Christian lady who made them true parents and completed their family.  Lisa was a member of Bethel Temple Assembly of God, later known as, Grace Pointe Assembly of God.  She passed away in April 2010 of cervical cancer.  Doris was a member of Grace Pointe Assembly of God since September 1990. She served in various positions there.  The one position she really felt called to was the prayer chain which she managed for around 20 years.  She felt like she was ministering to the people.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, C. Lee Yates; son-in-law, Robert Iacino; grandson, Michael Iacino; granddaughter, Tabatha Iacino Kelty, the Mother of Doris' three great-granddaughters, Gracelyn Kelty, Rosalyn Kelty Kailyn Kelty; several cousins and two god-daughters, Cheryl Maucere and Lisa M. Treppard, who are more like daughters than a lot of actual daughters are.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Grace Pointe Assembly of God, 6613 Hixson Pike, Hixson, Tn. 37343, with Reverend Terry Evans officiating.  Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
