Prison To Prosperity: Local Nonprofit Founder Mentors At-Risk Youth Through After School Workshops

  • Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Chattanooga-based nonprofit Reach One Teach One Uca was founded in 2018 by convicted felon Reginald Yearby. His goal is to mentor children in underserved communities through after school activities and leadership summits.

Reach One Teach One Uca will host a “Boys in Leadership” brunch on Sept. 19 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Brainerd Crossroads, 4011 Austin St." It’s an opportunity for the community to learn about
R.O.T.O and for eligible children to register for all the services they offer," officials said.

Reach One Teach One is an Early Intervention Program for children ages five to 14. R.O.T.O is
organized with the mission of providing Chattanooga’s underserved youth with opportunities to explore insight on community and careers and develop a positive outlook on the rest of their lives.

Executive Director Reginald Yearby considers himself a mentor and life coach to local youth in this vulnerable age group who need positive role models and a deeper understanding of personal accountability.

After spending 90 months in jail, Mr. Yearby said to himself, “I want to heal the community I tried to poison.”

Mr. Yearby says he benefited from such a mentorship in his job as a truck driver immediately following incarceration. He credits his former boss for pushing and challenging him to be a hard-working employee, which gave him the confidence to start Reach One Teach One Uca.

The program has grown from 24 to 64 children in two years and Mr. Yearby is looking to further expand community outreach.

Reach One Teach One Uca is a 501c3 nonprofit that relies on the support of donors who align
with the mission of after-school education and sports involvement for at-risk youth in the Chattanooga
region. To donate, go to: www.gofundme.com/reach-one-teach-one-uca.
