Filipi Goncalvez had worked his way into the box and was shifting around Finley Stadium’s damp turf while looking for space. When he finally got the ball a few yards from the goal, Goncalvez was ready to use his right foot to smash the ball past the keeper.
It was the first of four goals for Corinthians forward, whose team defeated Peria Escondida 10-2 in the early morning Chattanooga Star Soccer League (Futbolito De Las Estrellas) matchup.
Corinthians’ coach Jorge Guzman started at goalkeeper, but was rarely bothered by the opposing team.
Aside from a few darting runs from Escondida forward Monchis, the opponents hardly had possession.
Winger Mario Diacomo shredded whoever tried to keep up with him on the outside, and forwards Goncalvez and Edgar Kavistan were often on the other side of his passes.
Kavistan knocked in four goals, two of which came on counters early in the second half. On both plays, he timed up his run, slipped past the Escondida center backs and had easy one-on-ones with the keeper.
“They didn’t have their whole team, so let’s just say that,” Kavistan said. “When I play, I’m looking to score as much as I can. I’m too focused on scoring.”
The other standout player Corinthians only played a half before he had to leave. Robin V., number 23, banged in two goals before the halftime whistle blew and then decided to head out.
The Escondida offense didn’t really show up until later in the second half, when they scored a couple of goals in the 31st and 37h minute. Monchis got one, and Wesly kicked in the other to at least put Escondida on the board.
