The Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 3-1 at Southern Conference regular season champion Samford Sunday afternoon in the season finale for both teams.
Chattanooga finished the regular season 6-10-2 overall and 3-5-1 in SoCon play while the Bulldogs went 9-0 against the league and posted a 12-3-2 mark on the year.
In the 88th minute, the Mocs got on the board on a ball sent over the Bulldog defense into the box.
Maddie Burman took the ball down the right side then sent a shot into the box that deflected off a Samford player and to the head of Mackenzie Smith at the goal for her third of the year.
Chattanooga controlled play throughout much of the opening frame, but Samford responded in the second half, not allowing a shot from UTC until the 56th minute. Samford got a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the second half and a third 20 minutes later.
The Bulldogs outshot UTC 11-6. Smith led UTC with a pair of shots, both on goal while four more got off a shot including Faith Gober who had the Mocs’ third shot on goal.
Keeper Abbey Saddler, who saw action in all 18 matches this season and started 16, made three saves in the match.
Chattanooga concludes the 2021 season at 6-10-2 overall and 3-5-1 in league play, tied with Wofford for eighth. The Mocs will host the Terriers Tuesday evening at the UTC Sports Complex in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. Parking and admission is free to this match.
