Moc Volleyball Hosts Furman, Citadel

The Chattanooga Mocs’ indoor volleyball team returns to Maclellan Gym this weekend to host the Furman Paladins and The Citadel Bulldogs on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are slated for 6 p.m.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP
Chattanooga enters the two-match home stand with a 2-8 record in SoCon play and have lost the last five. The Mocs dropped two four-set matches at Western Carolina and UNCG to close out the four-match road trip last week. 

INSIDE THE SQUAD
Offensively, Maia Rackel leads the team with 269 kills, averaging 3.06 kills per set. Rackel and fellow senior, Gylian Finch have combined for 48% of the team’s 1006 kills. Second-year setter, Sophia Bossong, paces the Mocs’ offense, averaging 7.93 assists per set. She has a kill in 22 of the 23 matches this season and is averaging one every two sets. Defensively, the back row for the Mocs, led by Paige Gallentine, is one of the best in the league. Gallentine is second in the SoCon with 4.94 digs per set this season. Liz Tomlin joins her in the back row as the primary defensive specialist. She’s averaging 1.99 digs per set.  

ABOUT FURMAN
Furman enters the match with a 7-12 record and a 2-7 mark in league action. The Paladins are led by Neci Harris who is hitting .339 this season, averaging 2.93 kills per frame. Bella Tolone paces the team with 3.22 kills/set with 206 this season. She is the only Paladin with more than 200 kills. Furman is hitting .160 this season, while opponents are hitting .229 against them. They have slotted 104 aces and have allowed the same amount from their opponent. Furman’s two conference wins have come against the Woffod Terriers, three and five-set victories.   

LAST TIME OUT VS. FURMAN
The last time the Paladins and Mocs met, it was the most notable match for UTC at that point in the season. Down two sets to none after suffering a 25-17 loss in the second set, the Mocs battled back and dominated the next three sets to take the match in five. It was the first time UTC came back from a SoCon 2-0 deficit since Sept. 21, 2018 vs. Wofford. The Mocs also handed Furman its fifth loss after leading 2-0 since 2008.   

ABOUT THE CITADEL
Chattanooga will be The Citadel’s second of four straight road matches. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 1-1 weekend at home after defeating Samford in four sets before falling to league-leading Mercer. Sharlissa de Jesus, The Citadel’s fifth-year outside hitter, leads the conference with 4.27 kills per set. She has 252 kills in just 59 sets and is the SoCon’s active career leader in kills.  

LAST TIME OUT VS. THE CITADEL
The day after the Mocs’ come-from-behind five-set thriller over Furman, The Citadel handed UTC a 3-0 loss in Charleston. After two close sets to begin the match the Bulldogs defeated the Mocs 25-12 in the final set. The Citadel outhit UTC .195 - .061 after hitting .379 in the final frame. Chloe Bryan led the Mocs with eight kills in the match.   

SERIES HISTORY
Furman leads the all-time series vs. Chattanooga 48-25 and the Mocs have suffered just six losses to The Citadel in 37 meetings between the two teams. UTC is 15-19 against Furman at home and 14-1 vs. The Citadel in Maclellan.
