Richard Swanson
Richard Arthur Swanson, 75, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021.
Richard was born in Chicago and raised in Waukesha, Wi. He received a bachelor’s degree from Carthage College in history and political science, a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
Richard taught a variety of history courses and coached at the McCallie School for 33 years. In 1989, he started the McCallie rowing program, a team that achieved great success over the 20 years Richard was the head coach. He was most proud of the number of McCallie rowers who continued their rowing careers at the collegiate level, and those athletes who found a life-long sport in rowing.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Susan Swanson; his son, Anders Swanson (Cathi); and his grandson, William Swanson.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Nov. 2, from 4-7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga and Ascension Living Valley Residence for the care and support they gave to Richard and his family.
