The John Sevier Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution, as part of the SAR’s America 250th anniversary celebrations honoring the events of the American revolution, on Thursday performed a short ceremony honoring the service of Patriot James Cozby and then Robert Patterson.
The ceremonies celebrated the Patriots’ service on the 241st Anniversary of the battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. The Battle of Kings Mountain is often referred to as the turning point of the Revolution and key to the Southern Campaign. Historians often note that it was the largest all-American battle of the war except for the British commander. In addition to the Patriot’s service biography being presented, his burial site’s flag was replaced. The reflagging ceremony is a short formal ceremony by which the old flag that was posted in 2020 is retired and a new flag installed.
Ceremony participating organizations included SAR and DAR members from the John Sevier Chapter TNSSAR, Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter TNSSAR and Chickamauga Chapter TNDAR.
Robert Patterson was not only an active Revolutionary War veteran, but is known by several Hamilton County historians as the first citizen of the county.
The John Sevier Chapter will conduct a ceremony on Oct. 16 honoring five of its founding charter members buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga. Individuals or organizations interested in participating with the SAR in our Patriotic programs can contact the John Sevier Chapter at: https://johnsevierchapter.org/home for more information.
