The Chattanooga Red Wolves SC found a road win Saturday night in a rematch of the USL Championship final of 2022, securing a hard-fought 2-1 win over South Georgia Tormenta FC signaling a team on the rise.

Playing with urgency and intent from the opening whistle, the Red Wolves made an early statement in Statesboro. Forward Zahir Vazquez opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a perfectly placed assist from Josh Ramos, who once again proved to be a dynamic force down the wing. The early goal set the tone for Chattanooga’s high-pressure, opportunistic approach throughout the night.

After a string of close matches earlier this season, the Red Wolves came into Saturday determined to turn narrow performances into wins and this time, they got the result they were looking for.

“We’re learning how to close games, how to take control in key moments and how to stay sharp under pressure,” Chattanooga Red Wolves SC Head Coach Scott McKenzie said. “This was a big step for us, and I’m proud of how we competed from start to finish. We’re taking that energy and confidence into this week’s match at home. We know what we’re capable of, and we’re ready to show it again on Saturday.”

Veteran goalkeeper Ricardo Jerez made his first league start in nearly two seasons and brought a calm, experienced presence to the back line. Jerez was called on early to keep Tormenta at bay and responded with poise.

Despite Tormenta having more possession throughout the match, Chattanooga stayed organized and disciplined defensively, limiting the home side’s chances. A missed penalty in the second half preserved the Red Wolves’ lead and minutes later, Chattanooga capitalized. Midfielder Pedro Hernandez pounced on a rebound in the 69th minute to double the lead and give the Red Wolves the cushion they needed.

Tormenta pulled one back in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough to undo Chattanooga’s resilient performance.

The Chattanooga Red Wolves return home to CHI Memorial Stadium this Saturday, May 31, for a matchup with Forward Madison FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. as Chattanooga looks to build on its momentum in front of its home crowd.
