Sam Stansell
Sam Stansell, 96, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, May 10, 2021.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1924 in Signal Mountain. At 17, Sam left high school, joining the US Navy. He served in both World War II and the Korean War, aboard the USS Saratoga CV3 and USS Mississippi. He received 10 bronze stars and two Presidential Citations for battles in WWII in the South Pacific. Upon returning home, Sam spent his professional career at Combustion, rising to the rank of general foreman. After retirement, he traveled with Mimi, spent time with his grandchildren and enjoyed hunting, fishing and growing blueberries at his home on the lake with friends and family. He was placed in the Hall of Fame at Red Bank High School on November 12, 2018, receiving his honorary high school diploma at the young age of 93.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Susie Bailey Stansell; wife of 72 years, Edna Ewton Stansell; sons, Gary and Mike; and eight siblings.
He is survived by his grandchildren, Jody Stansell and Jenny (Jamie) Hixson; great-grandchildren, Cole and Grace Hixson and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 14, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Reverend Dwight Kilbourne officiating.
