Mocs Softball Splits With Samford At Home

  • Sunday, May 9, 2021
Senior Hayleigh Weissenbach laced a two-out, two-run walk-off double in a 4-3 game one victory before the Chattanooga Mocs softball team dropped a 6-2 decision in game two during an intense Southern Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon inside Frost Stadium.

Following the split, Chattanooga moves to 12-23 overall and 7-8 in SoCon play. The Mocs need a victory in tomorrow's series finale to earn a berth into the SoCon Tournament. Samford was eliminated from postseason contention following the game one loss and moves its mark to 18-26 overall and 7-10 in the league.

Tickets remain for tomorrow's do-or-die SoCon finale against Samford set for a 2 p.m.
ET start. General tickets can be purchased here, while student tickets can be reserved here.

Chattanooga 4, Samford 3
Samford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Timberlyn Shurbutt laced a two-run double to the gap in right center following a pair of hits to open the game. It marked the first time Brooke Parrott allowed first inning runs in her last five starts.

Chattanooga's Emily Coltharp led off the home half of the first with a double and later came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Adison Keylon, cutting the deficit in half 2-1. After Parrott kept Samford off the board, Cameren Swafford tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with her team-leading fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to right.

Samford pulled back ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Kathryn Jackson singled to third base with the bases full and two outs. Hannah Wood came in relief of the starter Parrott in the top of the sixth and kept the Bulldogs off the board after allowing just two hits over the final two innings of work.

Down a run in the bottom of the seventh and one out, pinch-hitter Rayanna Janke and Kailey Snell drew back-to-back walks to land runners at first and second. Following a groundout, Hayleigh Weissenbach delivered with a two-run double to the right gap on a 3-2 count to lift the Mocs to a walk-off 4-3 victory.

Wood (6-8) earned the victory in the circle following her relief duties. Parrott fired 5.0 innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out three in a no-decision.

The Mocs were out-hit in the contest 9-7 but were led by multi-hit performances from Coltharp (2-for-3, 2 R) and Kruse (2-for-3, 2 2B). Keylon and Swafford each finished 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece.

Samford 6, Chattanooga 2
Starter Hannah Wood kept Samford scoreless over her first 4.0 innings of work in the circle, stranding a pair of Bulldog runners in each of the first 3.0 innings.

Chattanooga struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third when Gracey Kruse and Kailey Snell led off with consecutive doubles before a two-out RBI single from Hayleigh Weissenbach made it 2-0.

Wood continued to roll through the first 5.0 innings to keep Chattanooga ahead 2-0. The Mocs threatened in the home half of the fifth after a Kruse leadoff single but failed to push a run across. Samford again left a pair stranded in the top of the sixth but cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a two-out RBI infield single.

After a leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and defensive miscue in the top of the seventh, Brooke Parrott entered in relief of Wood with a runner on third and one out. The Bulldogs recorded back-to-back singles to tie the game at 2-2 and force Wood back into the circle.

Samford followed with three RBI singles with the bases loaded in addition to a Chattanooga fielding error that allowed the score to blossom to 6-2. The Mocs were retired in just three pitches to end the ball game in the final at-bat.

Chattanooga was out slugged 14-6 in the hit column and were held hitless over the final four innings. Kruse posted another multi-hit performance with a 2-for-3, double, day at the plate. Liz Rodebaugh (1-for-3) and Kailey Snell (1-for-2, R) added doubles while Weissenbach (1-for-3, RBI) singled in a run.

Chattanooga (12-23, 7-8 SoCon) needs a victory in the series finale against Samford tomorrow to advance to next week's SoCon Tournament. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+. "Senior Day" festivities will commence following the conclusion of the game.
