The Three Sisters: Their Legacy In Native Culture - Part I Set For July 10

  • Friday, June 25, 2021

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special one-hour, ranger-led program on Saturday, July 10, at 2 p.m. exploring the unique horticulture practice of the Three Sisters. This program will take place at the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District at approximately 200 Moccasin Bend Road. Special program signs will direct visitors to the program site.

What is the Three Sisters form of agriculture? No, it is not three women who are sisters tending to their gardens. The Three Sisters are the crops of corn, beans, and squash. For centuries these three crops have been at the center of American Indian agriculture and their way of life. These three seeds, when planted together, represent the most important harvest for many American Indian cultures because each one helps the other to thrive and produce. Participants will learn just how these plants work together to produce the sustenance that so many American Indian cultures relied on throughout the centuries and how to cultivate a Three Sisters garden.
