CSO Shares 2021-22 Season Lineup And Event Procedures

  • Thursday, September 16, 2021

Tickets are on sale now for the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera's 21/22 season, featuring the return of full orchestral performances for the first time since March 2020. The organization's First Horizon Foundation Pops Series and Barnett and Company Masterworks Series will have a new home at Memorial Auditorium, and the Chamber Series will resume with smaller ensemble performances at a variety of venues throughout the community. Programming for the season includes Beethoven's Eroica, Revolution: The Music of The Beatles, The Music of Harry Potter, and more.

The season will open Thursday, Sept. 23, with an evening of works from across the globe and a special performance of George Walker’s moving Lyric for Strings, which we will be performed in memory of those lost to COVID-19. The First Horizon Pops Series will begin Oct. 9 as the CSO takes on iconic film scores from Star Trek, Mission Impossible, and more during Lights! Camera! Pops! Two special events are also on the schedule for the 21/22 season, including a Halloween weekend performance of The Music of Harry Potter on Oct. 30 and a journey through beloved childhood classics in Disney in Concert Magical Music from the Movies on Feb. 26.

“I am looking forward to re-introducing the CSO to the community after a year of socially-distanced concerts during the 2021/22 season,” says Kayoko Dan, CSO music director. “We are also proud to continue featuring many Chattanooga artists, including Principal Timpani Alex Wadner, Principal Piccolo Amelia Dicks, and Lee University's Jonathan Jung on piano, plus collaborations with the CSO Chorus and Chattanooga Ballet.”

The Barnett & Company Masterworks Series will feature both beloved classical works and exciting new pieces from contemporary composers throughout the season. Audiences will experience renowned works such as Beethoven's Eroica, Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The season will also feature talented guest artists such as Elena Urioste on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Violin Concerto in G Minor and Jonathan Jung on Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, as well as a must-see collaboration with The Chattanooga Ballet as they bring their original choreography to Stravinsky’s Apollo. The CSO will also continue to highlight female composers and composers of color with pieces from Julia Perry, Gabriela Lena Frank, Anne Guzzo, and more.

The First Horizon Foundation Pops Series will bring back popular annual events such as the holiday concert Home for the Holidays and the Valentine's weekend program Big Band Fever.  Talented Broadway vocalists will join the CSO to perform hits from Hamilton, Wicked, and more during Broadway Tonight!, while Lights! Camera! Pops! Will bring to life classic scores from blockbuster films. The Pops Series will close with the highly anticipated Revolution: The Music of The Beatles, featuring top vocalists in a symphonic tribute to the Fab Four.

The Chamber Series allows audiences to enjoy smaller ensemble performances in an intimate setting. Programming this year will include a special guest performance from local guitarist Michael McCallie during Beethoven Symphony No. 1, a collaboration with Opera Tennessee on Copland's Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson, and concerts highlighting CSO musicians, including Principal Oboe Jessica Smithorn and Principal Clarinet Robert West. Venues for each performance will vary, but include Chattanooga State as well as area churches.
