For the third time this season Lee’s PJay Smith has been awarded the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week honor the league office announced on Tuesday.
Smith, a talented guard and lockdown defender from LaVergne, Tenn., has made an immediate impact for the Flames this season. He led Lee to a 2-0 week with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. He was instrumental in the Flames 66-63, victory over red hot West Alabama with 12 points, five rebounds and two assists off the bench.
“PJay continues to play well for us and brings our team a great spark off the bench.
Some of our best basketball is played with two-point guards on the floor. Beyuan and PJay are a great combination and really feed off each other,” said Lee head coach Bubba Smith. “I know he’s made some big shots recently, but PJay’s defensive presence has had the biggest impact on our team so far this season, which typically is the hardest adjustment for young players to make.”
The Flames will get back to work on Saturday when they host Montevallo at Walker Arena at 4 p.m. The Falcons have won three straight and are 6-2 in the GSC. They will host GSC leader Union University on Thursday before making the trip over to Cleveland for Saturday’s matchup.
