Junior Tomas Rodriguez of the Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week following his individual efforts in last week's season opener against Jacksonville State, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Rodriguez earns the award for the third time of his career after picking up two weekly honors during the 2021 spring season last year. The three career selections mark a new program record, besting Niklas Gerdes who won the award twice in 2020.
"We are very proud of Tomas becoming the first player in our program's history to gain three 'player of the week' awards," said head coach Chuck Merzbacher.
"He has amazing work ethic and he handles the challenge of playing in the No.
1 spot in each and every match."
Rodriguez and his doubles teammate Peyton Gatti, who are ranked No. 46 in the ITA National Rankings, picked up where they left off from the successful fall campaign and downed the duo of Alexander Vishnevskiy and Thomas Norwood, 6-2. In singles play, Rodriguez earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Joaquin Vallejo to cap off his perfect record for the match.
Chattanooga (0-1, 0-0 SoCon) returns to action on Friday, February 4 when it travels to Blacksburg, Va., to face ACC-member Virginia Tech. Stick to GoMocs.com for all information regarding Chattanooga men's tennis.
