George David “Dave” Abercrombie died peacefully at the Chattanooga Hospice Center on December 31, 2021, at the age of 83.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Kelly and Elizabeth Elzora Abercrombie, his wife, Mary Jolley Abercrombie, sisters, Mary Lewis, Helen Hart and Judy Johnston.
He is survived by his brother, Roy (Geneva) Abercrombie, his three sons, David (Diane) Abercrombie, Steve (Kristi) Abercrombie and Kelly (Martha) Abercrombie, stepchildren, Jay (Kelly) Jolley, Mickey Jolley and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
He was a member of First Centenary Methodist Church and the Sound of Tennessee Barbershop Chorus, of which he was recently inducted into the Ring of Honor.
Dave was also known as Dad or Grandpa. He was a man who learned through life that it was better to serve than to be served. People touched by his kindness, encouragement, contagious smile, and laugh have told us of what he meant to them. Hearing those stories, combined with how we feel about him fills our hearts with happiness knowing his reward will be great! Dave sang his way through the days on this earth forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. He barber shopped, swung out of rhythm with the choir, offered his voice to the Lord in church and sang the national anthem for the Lookouts blessing all that heard. Dave’s biggest downfalls were his oversized, compassionate heart and pride in his family. If you were subjected to excessive pictures, videos or stories of his kids and grandkids, please accept our combined light-hearted apology. Although, I think we will all agree it feels good to know someone is proud of you. We hope he knows we are proud of him for the way he treated others and us. If we can be half of what he was, it should be considered a success.
