Following a two point loss at McCallie School, Boyd Buchanan promptly turned things around against Collegedale. The Bucs used their size to torment the Eagles on the boards and their skill to knock down threes all over the court.

The first possession of the game served as the blueprint of success to come for the Buccaneers. After three straight misses and offensive rebounds, Boyd Buchanan kicked the ball out from the paint for a Caden Johnson three. Johnson finished with a game high 23, while Jaylon Moore and Calen Nunez each had 11.

The four year starter caught fire early and played a significant role in Boyd Buchanan’s win over Collegedale. Johnson canned six triples that barely even touched the rim as they sunk through the hoop. His lightning fast release made him a prime catch and shoot candidate following the multitude of offensive boards that the home team was able to come away with.

Another key player for Boyd was Moore. The towering center made his presence known despite a slow start scoring the basketball.

“I thought Jaylon really set the tone for us on the offensive glass,” Coach Josh Templeton praised. “He’s one of the best rim defenders in the area. With his verticality he could not score a point for us and still be huge.”

Moore came up with four offensive rebounds in the first quarter alone and added eleven points thanks to a stellar third quarter that he opened with a resounding putback dunk.

While Collegedale was defensively sound enough to hang around early, their lack of size continually caused problems. The Eagles kept things within six points at the end of the first, but they were outscored by sixteen in the second and never truly recovered.

For the Eagles, George Shrode was a bright spot. The big man did what he could to help space the floor with his buttery smooth jumpshot. He finished with 12 points, but did not see many passes come his way until the second half, limiting his offensive impact.

Garet Gipson paced the Eagles with 19.

With three players 6’4” or taller, Boyd used an army of gangly limbs to muscle their way to the win.

“Any time that a team is running a zone or maybe a little undersized, crashing the boards is very important,” Coach Templeton said.

“Coming off a loss we’re always gonna be very competitive,” he continued. “I knew that we’d be ready to play tonight.”

Boyd Buchanan girls 63, Collegedale 21: The Lady Bucs dominated their contest against the Lady Eagles of Collegedale Academy with smiles on their faces throughout. Their 63-21 home victory doubled as their second district win of the season.

The game, in which the Lady Bucs never trailed, got out of hand quickly with the home team jumping out to a 7-0 advantage in the first minute. Boyd Buchanan used full court pressure to their advantage early and often in the landslide victory.

Sarah Peyton Durham led the Lady Bucs with 19 points and Dani Reeves tossed in 15.

“It’s everything!” Coach Tracey Walker said of the full court press. “This is the way we play and it lights a fire under our kids.”

Senior big Riley Robertson was a crucial part of the Lady Bucs’ defensive attack. On nearly every defensive possession of the first quarter she shouldered the responsibilities of guarding the inbounder. Robertson used her length to shrink passing lanes and was active in tipping passes and poking balls out of the Lady Eagles’ possession.

The high defensive energy that the home team displayed proved to be contagious on the other side of the ball. The offensive progressed smoothly with transition opportunities greasing the wheels of the unit on multiple occasions.

Despite the substantial lead that Boyd Buchanan produced, they did not take their foot off the gas pedal. Until the final whistle was blown, the second unit was scrumming for loose balls and pushing the tempo on fast breaks. Cries of support echoed out from the bench even as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

“It’s a big credit to them that they just love each other,” Coach Walker raved. “That helps in any game that we’re in.”
