Anti-gun-violence advocates and gun violence survivors will come together at the steps of Miller Park on Saturday to advocate for better common sense gun laws and to challenge Congress to save lives.
Chattanooga was thrust into the national spotlight after a wave of mass shootings across the United States included the shooting on May 28 that injured six teens in the city’s downtown district.
"Gun violence has touched every part of our nation, from suicides to domestic violence, from mass shootings to disputes on our streets; the deaths and casualties increase every day," said Shiloh Mcculley, an organizer for the event. "Lobbyists, including the NRA, are pushing for more access to guns through legislation that endangers the lives of everyone in our communities. The evidence is clear: Loosening restrictions on access to guns is not the solution."
Speakers will include: Rep. Yusef Hakeem, Tennessee House of Representatives; Meg Gorman, Democratic candidate for TN 3rd Congressional District; Alison Gorman, Democratic candidate for TN House District 26; Sid Gross, Chattanooga Youth Activists; Dr. Mary Lambert, director of Chattanooga’s Office of Community Health, Demetrus Coonrod - District 9 Chattanooga City Council; Raquetta Dotley, vice chair of the Chattanooga City Council, District 7; and other city and county officials.
