Charles L. Slaten, Jr.
Charles L. Slaten, Jr., 96, of Byron, Georgia, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2022, in his home surrounded by family. He died of a dementia related illness.
He was born in Chattanooga, on Oct. 7, 1925, to Charles Lee and Nora Slaten. Charles served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Altamha for a short time and then transferred to the U.S.S. Neches, where he was promoted to Coxswain, and was the pilot of ship for the remainder of the war.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his daughter, Karen Hixon; his wife, Lois Stephens Slaten; his younger brother, Gene Slaten; and younger sister, Peggy Twomey.
He was survived by his daughter, Gail Hughes (John); his granddaughter, Stephanie Holdren (Franklin), grandson, Oscar David Hixon Jr. (Tammy), grandson, Chris Hughes (Michael), granddaughter, Jenny Hughes; great-granddaughter, Lindsay Bryan (Max), and their daughter Chloe; great-granddaughter, Jordon Malone; great-grandson, Trey Hixon; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, where military honors will be performed. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at Chattanooga Funeral Home- East Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to VFW Post 1289 or American Legion Post 214.
