String Theory At The Hunter Announces Season Lineup

String Theory, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will commence its 14th concert season this fall, featuring some of the world’s most accomplished musicians.

“Last year, Season 13 made a wonderful return to in-person concerts at the breathtaking Hunter Museum,” said Dr. Gloria Chien, pianist and String Theory artistic director. “The loyalty, persistence, and trust that our audience and supporters give make it possible to bring this caliber of musicians to the region, and we are so honored to return to a full lineup of six can’t-miss concerts this season!”

String Theory is a chamber music series that brings artists from around the world to perform in the Hunter Museum of American Art. The 2022-23 season, beginning in October, will feature six world class concerts with 19 total musicians.

The season will open with the Oct. 11 concert, featuring duo pairing Alexi Kenney, violin, and Bridget Kibbey, harp. Mr. Kenney and Ms. Kibbey will play a unique concert of arrangements, fitting for this fascinating instrumental duo.

Oct. 31 will bring the long-awaited return of the Danish String Quartet to the Hunter Museum stage. Members Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, violin; Frederik Øland, violin; Asbjørn Nørgaard, viola; and Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin, cello; will perform Purcell’s Chacony and Schubert’s String Quartet.

Grammy Award-winners Jason Vieaux, guitar, and Tim McAllister, saxophone, will perform at the Dec. 13 concert. Mr. Vieaux and Mr. McAllister will play an innovative set, arranged for and enhanced by their unique pairing.

The first concert of 2023 will take place on Jan. 17 and will feature the all-saxophone Kenari Quartet, featuring members Bob Eason, soprano saxophone; Kyle Baldwin, alto saxophone; Corey Dundee, tenor saxophone; and Steven Banks, baritone saxophone. The group will perform a creative set of arrangements, including Grave et Presto’s Rivier and Ciudades’s Lago.

For the March 7 concert, Dr. Chien, on piano, will join visiting artists Jennifer Frautschi, violin, and Zlatomir Fung, cello, for an evening of duos and trios, playing selections from various periods.

On April 11, the season will conclude as Dr. Chien makes another appearance, this time with the Brentano Quartet. Along with Dr. Chien, quartet members Mark Steinberg, violin; Serena Canin, violin; Misha Amory, viola; and Nina Lee, cello; will present a program that pays tribute to Bohemian composer Antonin Dvorak.

Immediately preceding the Oct. 11, December, and January performances, String Theory will host “Musical Dialogues,” featuring conversations between Dr. Chien and visiting artists about their experiences as musicians, their relationship to music, and other interesting points.

Prior to the Oct. 31, March, and April concerts, “Art Connections” will take place, giving attendees the opportunity to engage with the intersection of art and music in the Hunter galleries. Former Hunter Chief Curator Ellen Simak and Maestro Robert Bernhardt will compare works from the Hunter collection to the music featured in the concert.

Tickets are available now. Individual concert tickets are $45 for non-members, $35 for Hunter members, and $10 for students and music teachers with ID. Individual tickets can be purchased up until the day of the concert. Season subscriptions are $250 for non-members, $200 for Hunter members, and $60 for students and music teachers.
