Vernita Williams, 67, of Chattanooga passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2023, in Monroeville, Alabama.

She was a 1974 graduate of Monroe County High School in Monroeville, AL and received her degree in elementary education from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL.

She was employed as a teacher by the Hamilton County School District where she taught second grade at Howard Elementary School and Eastside Elementary School until her retirement. She was a member of Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church.

Vernita was preceded in death by her parents, David and Novella Poindexter; and sisters, Almeta Poindexter, Autherine Richardson, Lily Faye Andrews, and Shirley Stallworth.

Survivors include her husband, Michael James Williams; son, Michael James Williams ll; daughters, Danielle Lakesha Williams, all of Chattanooga, TN, Tiffany Nicole Williams of Louisville, TN, and Shanelle Vernita Williams of Nashville, TN; sisters, Royal Jean Beeks of Los Angeles, CA, Judy (Anthony) Cade of Carson, CA, Durlie Langham of Moss Point, MS, Alberta Poindexter of Monroeville, AL, Annie Ruth McCorvey of Pensacola, FL; brothers, Alvin (Bernice) Poindexter of Monroeville, AL, David (Elizabeth) Poindexter Jr. of Roselle, NJ, and Charles (Mary) Poindexter of Pensacola, FL; brothers-in-law, Albert Richardson and Case Andrews of Monroeville, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be held from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, at Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a noon funeral service.

Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens - East.
