Choral Arts of Chattanooga will present the Lord Nelson Mass and "Ave verum" and "Laudate Dominum" from Mozart's Vesperae Solennes De Confessore, K. 339 on Friday, Oct. 27.
The original name for Haydn's Mass was Missa in Angustiis (Mass for troubled times). At the time of writing, Austria was on the brink of being taken over by the forces of Napoleon. It was indeed a troubling time for Haydn and his fellow countrymen. However, the month before the debut of the Mass, Admiral Horatio Nelson would rout Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile. The Mass would take on his name in honor of his achievement. Haydn's work takes the ageless text of the Mass and sets it to music that explores themes of turmoil and confusion.
The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 554 McCallie Ave.
