Jim R. Reid, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many in Cleveland and in Indiana, and helper to many, suddenly passed from this life on to the one he longed for on Thursday, September 28, 2023. Jim was born in Decatur, Al. on June 3, 1944. He was not long in Alabama due to his family moving north to Indiana in search of better economic times. In high school, Jim met the love of his life, Bobbie Chapman, whose family had also made the northerly trek to Indiana from Alabama. Jim and Bobbie were married on March 25, 1963 and began a family. Jim entered the trades as a pipefitter in Local 597 which he continued until retirement.
In the early ‘70s, Jim’s dad and he built a house in Portage, In., where Bobbie and he raised their two children. In 1980, Jim made the decision to follow Christ and was active in every church in which he was a member. Jim and family were actively involved members of Hobart Assembly of God for many years, where Jim served on the board and Bobbie and he made many, close life-long friends. In 1997, Jim decided to pursue his desire to build houses and moved to Cleveland, where he became a contractor. Jim and Bobbie became a part of Mount Olive Church of God, which was an integral part of their lives. Jim was not afraid to share his faith with people, no matter where he was. Throughout his life, Jim used his extensive knowledge of construction and plumbing to help people, for which he was known. He loved to spend time with family. He enjoyed to fish when he had the opportunity.
He is survived by his son, Dwaine Reid & wife, Valerie (Union Mills, In.); his daughter, Penny Shank (Cleveland); his sister, Sharon Langford (Oklahoma); his brother, Richard “Dick” Reid, (Texas); four grandchildren, Arielle Reid (Charlotte, NC), Marissa Reid (Charlotte, NC), Ryan Shank & wife Sierra (Cleveland) and Sarah Reid (Houston, Tx.); and three great-grand-children, Rilynn, Wyatt & Everhett Shank (Cleveland); and many close friends in Indiana and Tennessee. He will be sorely missed.
A Remembrance of Life Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Mount Olive Church of God, with Pastor James Sears and Pastor Gary Sears officiating. The interment will follow at Mount Olive Cemetery, with family and friends serving as casket bearers. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at the church.
