I
n respect to several letters putting down our public school system: My child goes to CSAS and I couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve sent my kids to private and public schools. I’ve had good experiences with both of them.
I’m sure there are public schools that aren’t the greatest and they tend to be in areas of the community that are struggling in many ways. The kids in private schools tend to have professional parents with a good education and decent incomes and all the associated advantages. Poor kids have a more difficult time in a myriad of ways.
It appears to be in vogue to put down public schools. One of your writers even said he couldn’t understand why the public schools cost more money. Is this guy unaware of inflation? What hole does he live in? In addition, public schools tuition goes up every year as well.
Overall public school teachers have a much more demanding job than a private school teacher. Much of what makes the job so tough is the same reason as why public school test scores are lower than we would wish.
One of the things I resent most is the undertone of racism. Private schools tend to be mostly white and the brown and black kids that are there come from “the right kinds” of families. Our public school kids are a real world mix of colors and backgrounds.
I think there is nothing to be gained from not supporting our public schools. And I am more than happy to pay more taxes to do so.
