Trish Newsom
Dayton City School announces that Superintendent Trish Newsom has been selected by her peers as the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents (TOSS) Southeast Region Superintendent of the Year. The Southeast Region Core of School Superintendents is composed of 14 school districts from 10 counties.
"This honor recognizes her exceptional leadership, commitment to academic excellence and dedication to the success of students in our community," officials said. "Under Mrs. Newsom’s leadership, Dayton City School has achieved impressive milestones.
"This year, the district was named an Exemplary District by the Tennessee Department of Education, earned the designation of a Reward School and received an overall letter grade of “A” on the state report card.
"Additionally, Dayton City School was recognized nationally as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School.
Mrs. Newsom introduced this program with a heartfelt vision of nurturing strong relationships and a positive school culture.
"During her five-year tenure as superintendent, Mrs. Newsom oversaw a transformative $7 million remodeling project, resulting in the construction of a new cafetorium that has greatly enhanced the
school’s facilities and student experiences.
"Mrs. Newsom has been a dedicated member of the Dayton City School community for 18 years, having previously served as a physical education teacher, school counselor and principal before assuming the superintendent role in 2020. Before her time in Tennessee, she worked in England and Georgia at a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) school, gaining valuable experience working with diverse student populations.
"A fun fact about Mrs. Newsom: she is one of only 7,016 American women to earn the Six Star Finisher title, having completed all six of the World Marathon Majors — Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City and Tokyo. Later this year, she will complete her seventh major marathon in Sydney, Australia, joining an even more elite group of global runners.
"As the Southeast Region honoree, Mrs. Newsom is now one of eight superintendents across the state eligible for the Tennessee Superintendent of the Year award, which will be announced later this year."
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the Southeast Region Superintendent of the Year. This recognition means a lot to me, but it truly belongs to the remarkable people I have the privilege to work with every day. Our teachers, staff, students, families and community partners are the heart of everything we do, and I’m proud to share this honor with them,” said Mrs. Newsom.
