Shirley “Bernice” Chunn, 85, of Chattanooga, took her heavenly flight on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in a local health care facility.

She was a 1956 graduate of Howard High School. “Bernice” was a faithful member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where she sang with the Gospel Chorus, the Mass Choir, and was a member of the Nurse's Guild. She was also a member of The Baptist Women’s League. Bernice retired from Parkridge Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James H. Chunn, Sr.; son, James H. Chunn, Jr.; daughters, Gwendolyn D. Chunn and Deborah Gaynell Smith; parents, Jeff and Ireatha Smith; grandmother, Pearl Lomax; sister, Flossie Beck; and grandsons, Artavius and James Chunn, III.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey (Marla) Chunn; daughter, Veronica "Ronnie" Chunn; niece, Sandrel Adams; nephew, Greg (Patricia) Beck; her bonus son, Cedric (Tonya) Garner, all of Chattanooga; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Ellison of Huntsville, AL; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and host of grand-nieces and nephews; other relatives, long time friends, Mary Higgins, Dorothy Palmer and other friends.

Bernice will lie in state on Friday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at noon in the chapel with Pastor Wayne L. Johnson as the eulogist. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.
