Covenant Women Win 81-62 In Mountaintop Madness Opener

In the first game of Mountaintop Madness, the Covenant College women's basketball team  hosted Regent. Covenant led from start to finish to pick up its second victory of the season, 81-62. 

Lucy Benson and Amanda Neff each hit triples to help the Scots jump out to an 8-0 lead. 
Covenant kept pushing as it eventually scored the first 14 points of the game.  Breezy Savage and Benson hit two more 3-pointers for the Scots to take a 20-3 lead. Ella Grace Squires had Covenant's final basket of the quarter as Covenant led 22-5 after 10 minutes. 
 
The Royals opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 24-12. 
Covenant responded with a 10-0 run, highlighted by triples from Benson and Savage to put it ahead 34-12.

Sydney Sandhoff got on the scoresheet with an inside basket with 2:13 remaining to give the Scots a 38-15 lead. Regent ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, but Covenant went into the locker room ahead 38-24. 

McIntosh knocked down a 3-pointer for Covenant's first points of the third quarter with 7:17 remaining to put the score at 41-29. Midway through the quarter Savage got a basket on the fast break to keep the lead at 12 points. Each team went scoreless for just over the next three minutes. McIntosh hit another triple with 24 seconds remaining, but Regent got a basket right before the buzzer to only trail 50-39 going into the fourth. 

Benson scored on Covenant's first possession of the quarter with a 3-pointer. A baseline jumper by Megan Rouse followed by Benson's fifth and final triple of the game put the Scots ahead 61-43. Six made free throws across a couple of minutes put the Scots ahead for good at 73-55 with 2:53 left. Hannah Eidson and Emma Kayle Fuller each scored for Covenant in the final two minutes. 

Benson posted a double-double with career-highs in points with 22 and rebounds with 11. Savage and McIntosh each tallied 17 points. Neff flirted with a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. 

Covenant shot 39.7% (25-63) while Regent shot 28.9% (22-76). The Scots outrebounded the Royals 54-36. 81 points is a season-high for the Scots. 

Covenant faces future CCS foe Asbury Saturday at 4 p.m.
