Walter J. Ludwig, a long time resident of Signal Mountain, passed from this life into heaven, November 26, 2023. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was born in Barberton, Ohio on March 29, 1933, to parents Walter J. Ludwig and Betty Kline Ludwig. Walt attended Ohio Northern University graduating in 1955 with a B.S. in Pharmacy (with distinction). Immediately following graduation, he enrolled in Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science and was awarded an M.S. in Pharmacy. In 1957, Walt joined the U.S. Public Health Service as a Commissioned Officer, serving three years first as a pharmacist at the Phoenix Indian Hospital & Clinical Center then as laboratory analyst at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC. Walt joined Mead Johnson & Company in Evansville, Indiana in 1961 as a Quality Control Scientist, became Group Leader in Quality Control in 1966, and then moved to product development as Supervisor of Process Engineering in 1969. In 1978, Walt joined Chattem, Inc. in Chattanooga, Tennessee as Quality Assurance Director and in 1984 became Technical Director, Consumer Products Division. He retired in 1996.

He met Ruth Owens while living in Phoenix. They were married and “traveled together” for nearly sixty-four years. They have two sons, John (Sue) of St. Louis, Missouri and Paul (Uzma) of Annapolis, Maryland. Grandchildren are Seth Ludwig, Jessie (Samuel) Nastri, Jenna Ludwig, Shirin Ludwig, and Danial Ludwig. He is also survived by brother David (Phyllis) Ludwig and many nieces and nephews.

Walt was an active member of Northside Presbyterian church, serving as an Elder, and later he was an Elder at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. He was a faithful member of the Journey Sunday school class at Signal Pres. He was active in campus ministries at UTC, working to establish The HOUSE Presbyterian ministry. Other interests included family genealogy, small college sports, the Chattanooga Historical Society, MacDowell Music Club, and UTC Elder Scholars.

Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 7, at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, from 6–7 p.m. Private graveside ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 8, at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, 612 James Blvd., Signal Mountain.
