Carrie Irene Tenpenny Stone, 93, of Ooltewah, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 22, 2023.

She was born in Woodbury, Tn., where she lived with her parents and five younger siblings on a small dairy farm. She attended Austin Peay State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Irene also met her husband, Gil Stone, while in college. After graduating, they married and Irene began teaching, focusing on young children.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gil Stone, and her parents, Joe and
Mattie Mae Tenpenny. She is also preceded in death by her siblings: Thomas (Dot) Tenpenny,
Joe (Lucy) Tenpenny, Martha Glandon and Dorris Tenpenny. Irene is also preceded in death by
her nephew Tommy Tenpenny.

Our beloved mother is survived by her daughters, Rebecca (Michael) Evatt and Caroline (Hugh)
Morrow. She is survived by her brother Wayne (Carlene) Tenpenny and her brother-in-law Jack
Glandon. Mimi, as her grandchildren called her, is also survived by grandchildren: Jordan (Carrie) Evatt, Tyler (Paige) Evatt, Sarah (Max) Crabtree, Carly (Doug) Moss, Meredith (Jay) Brooks, and Hannah Morrow. Irene is survived by seven great grandchildren: Tate Evatt, Stone Evatt, Jay Brooks, Liza Brooks, Lolly Brooks, Izzy Moss, and Maddie Moss.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instruction with kindness.” Proverbs 31: 25-26. This
verse beautifully embodies Irene and her life. She came into this world ready to serve. Her
servant’s heart was evident in how she served her Lord, His church, her family, and anyone she
encountered, often with a loaf of homemade bread along with a copy of a Daily Bread devotional booklet. As we celebrate her life, Irene would want us to celebrate Jesus in her first and foremost.

Irene will be laid to rest in a private burial service near her husband in the Chattanooga National
Cemetery.

Visitation will take place at Ooltewah Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 31, at 12 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. officiated by Reverend Bill Mason. The family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the staff at the Lantern of Morning Pointe and Hearth Hospice for their compassionate care of our mother.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or
Ooltewah Baptist Church Global Impact Missions Fund.
