Longtime Chattanooga Firefighter Was Avid Whitewater Sportsman

Thomas “Tom” C. Montgomery, 51, of Dunlap, Tennessee, passed away on September 8, 2023.

Tom leaves his mother, Christine Naberhaus, father, James Montgomery and stepmother, Shirley Montgomery, sister, Jenny Montgomery, stepbrothers, Tom Naberhaus, Mike Naberhaus, Joe Naberhaus, Ed Naberhaus, numerous nieces and nephews and an extensive list of close friends.

Tom spent his early years in Morrow, Oh., but eventually made the Chattanooga area his permanent home. Upon graduating college with a degree in Outdoor Recreation Tom moved to Chattanooga, where along with mutual friends, he was drawn to the whitewater and scenic beauty and through the years he became part of a large extended family of friends. As a captain of a Chattanooga Fire Department, with more than 24 years of service, his impact on the community is immeasurable. Tom was an avid whitewater sportsman, known by his family and friends for his extensive knowledge and paddling of the regional river valleys.

His untimely passing is a loss to all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18.
