The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team got its 2023-24 season underway Friday at the Mason Rudolph Championships. The ladies shot 295 over the opening 18 at Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course and are tied with Alabama and UCLA after 18 holes.
Freshman Giulia Foresta got her collegiate career started the right way. The native of Rome, Italy, turned in a 2-under 70 circling six birdies on her first card. It paced a solid team effort to get the new season going with the lineup featuring four newcomers.
Sophomore Kera Healey posted 1-over 73, while another freshman Violeta Fernendez added 75.
Carmen Belmonte closed out the counting scores with 77. Makenzie Cooper had the drop with 79.
Auburn, one of the Mocs playing partners, lead with 274. Arizona State is second with 277 followed by Vanderbilt at 280. The Tigers Ami Gianchandani's 64 puts her atop the individual leaderboard.
The Mocs, Crimson Tide and Bruins are six shots behind Denver (289) in 10th. Louisville (293) and Middle Tennessee (294) are in between. The trio is three clear of College of Charleston (298), Baylor (300) and Florida Atlantic (305) with the Bears also playing with Chattanooga in round one.
The Mocs, Tide and Bruins spend their Saturday together beginning at 10:29 a.m., Eastern time starting on the 10th hole. Cooper opens for the group followed by Belmonte (10:38), Fernandez (10:47), Healey (10:56) and Foresta (11:05).
