Ethel Mae Pope was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 17, 1927, to the late John H. and Carrie Lucy Williams.

At an early age, Ethel accepted Jesus Christ as her savior and became a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Chattanooga. She was an active member of the senior choir and the stewardess board. Ethel's career spanned many years as she was first employed at an old chair factory in the early 40s, now the site of the Orchard Village subdivision. She then became employed at Hamilton National Bank until its closing in the mid-70s. Ethel later joined the production team at the Desoto plant, where she formed many good relationships and finally. She retired as an employee of Unum Provident.

Ethel was an active member of the Churchville community where she helped raise money for the church and participated in several neighborhood activities for the youth. Ethel was also an active participant in the Chattanooga Boys Choir for eight years where her efforts in fundraising efforts, including selling those famous pecans, allowed the choir to tour several countries.

Ethel loved her family, friends, and church. She was very giving and always made sure you didn't leave empty-handed. She had a magnetic personality and her sense of humor was like none other. She often looked forward to visits from her family, friends, and church members and having communion with the pastor. Her mind was sharp until the end and her favorite quote was "Everything is gonna be alright ". She always reminded you of how much God had done for her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Mom, we will always love you and miss you deeply. May God keep you in His care.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years Frank Benjamin Pope, Sr.

Survivors are her son, Frank Benjamin Pope Jr. and grandchildren, Deja Simone Pope and Devin Jamel Pope.

Public viewing will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, followed by a noon funeral service at Bethel AME Church, 2004 Walker Ave.

Interment will take place at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Arrangements are by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 423 622-9995.
