John Dennis Horne
John Dennis Horne, 77, passed away on October 18, 2024.
Born on April 5, 1947, in Buffalo, NY, John was the son of Muriel Eugenie Roth Horne (Emmy) and John Purcell Horne (Jack). After his early years in New York and Virginia, John moved to Signal Mountain, Tn., in 1956 and began his life in the Volunteer state. After graduating from Chattanooga City High School in 1964, he attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, a Captain of the cheerleading team, and a member of the Army ROTC. Upon graduating, John went to law school at the University of Tennessee, graduating with a J.D. in 1971. He later received a M.B.A. from the University of Memphis in 1978. John entered U.S. Army Active Duty Basic training and was stationed at the JAG school at the University of Virginia for three years, where he achieved the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps. John then moved to Memphis, Tn., in 1974, and began a life long career practicing law, the majority of his time as a proud partner of The Winchester Law Firm.
It was as a law student at UT that John met and courted the love of his life, Tommie Sue Parks, and began his life of love and devotion to his family and to the city of Memphis. John and Tommie married Dec. 18, 1971, and were married for 52 years. Soon after the arrival of twin boys, Brant and K.C. in 1974, John and Tommie moved back to Memphis and soon after Lindsey was born in 1977. John was a member of the Church of the Holy Communion also serving on the vestry, former President of the Kiwanis Club of Memphis, a member of the Phoenix Club, Memphis Civil Service Commission, a board member and chair of Shelby Residential & Vocational Services (SRVS), a member of the Letterman’s “T” Club at the University of Tennessee, and a Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation.
John meant many different things to many people in the Memphis community: he was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, a man of integrity and honesty as a practicing attorney, a dependable law partner, a steadfast and loyal friend, a die hard Tennessee Vol fan, a runner, a practical joker, a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, a regular at the AMEN Bible study at Second Presbyterian Church, a faithful parishioner of the Church of the Holy Communion, a Sunday school teacher, a lover of music, movies and books, an amateur carpenter/handyman, a ball-striking golfer, and a horrendous putter. Summing all the parts, John was a first class gentleman.
Above all else, John was a selfless family man. He devoted his life, everything he had, and all his energy and emotion to his family. He loved and adored his bride Tommie for 52 years, until her recent death earlier this year. They are survived by their three children and spouses, Dr. Kristopher Cornell Horne and Katheryn Canale Horne, Brantley Parks Horne and Caroline Johnson Horne, and Allison Lindsey Renovich and WillIam Robert Renovich, and their seven grandchildren, John Brantley Horne, Charles Michael Horne, Elizabeth Parks Renovich, Kristopher Cornell Horne, Jr., William Robert Renovich, Jr., Isabel Louise Horne, and John Price Renovich. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Kathi and Don Waters of Birmingham, and his niece and her family, Aimee and Judd Barnes (children Anne and Jeremy) of Birmingham.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday Oct. 25, at 10:30 a.m. in the Cheney Parish Hall at the Church of the Holy Communion in Memphis, Tn., with a memorial service to follow at noon. There will be a private family burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of Holy Communion.
