Mildred Martin Jackson, 100, of Chattanooga, peacefully departed from this world on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at a local hospital, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and joy.
She was born on a warm crisp spring morning in 1924 and grew up in a time of great change and embraced each stage of life with warmth, grace, and unwavering love for her family and friends.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Paige and Inez Martin; husband, Leonard Jackson, Sr.; son, Leonard Jackson, Jr.; granddaughter, Muriel Jackson Sammons, brother, Howard Martin, sisters, Wilhelmina Scott and Helena Martin, and brother, Eugene Martin.
A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Mildred touched the lives of everyone she met. She was known for her strength, perseverance, and a vibrant energy that never waned. Mildred lived every one of her 100 years with purpose and enthusiasm, embodying resilience through each challenge and embracing each joy with gratitude. She reared her children with a gentle yet steadfast hand, teaching them the values of compassion, integrity, and hard work.
As a grandmother, her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and boundless love, where countless memories were made and cherished. She took pride in her role as a matriarch, always encouraging and uplifting those around her. Her love of family spanned generations, and she made it a point to connect with family members from all across the country.
Known for her wisdom, quick wit, and beautiful heart, Mildred shared stories that would make you laugh and give you comfort. Her strength and kindness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Mildred enjoyed watching Family Feud with Steve Harvey and she also enjoyed working in her yard, especially with her beautiful flowers. Mildred Jackson’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life that left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. Though she departed from this world, her spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of her family and friends. We take solace in knowing she is reunited with loved ones who preceded her, and we find peace in the legacy of love she leaves behind.
Left to cherish her memory are her devoted son, Wayne Jackson and Ralph (Lillard) Jackson of Rockford, IL; daughter, Glenda Jackson; sister, Jewel Sommerville of Akron, OH, grandson, Mark Jackson, granddaughter, Marsha (Curtis) Drake; great-grandson, Richard (Tianna) Sammons, great-granddaughters, Lauryn Jackson and Laila Jackson, great-grandsons, Curtis J. Drake and Chase J. Drake; great-great- granddaughter, Kyliegh Sammons; devoted niece, Gloria (Mike) Murray of Mt. Clemons, MI; niece, Lisa Murray; special nieces, Corine Dunson, Cora Lee Goblee, Linda Jackson Barnes, and Helena Mellon; nephew, Marco (Debbie) Sommerville of Akron, OH; a host of other loved nieces and nephews; cherished friends, Charlotte Young and Sylvia Jackson.
Mildred Jackson, our beloved matriarch, will forever be missed, cherished, and remembered.
Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. at Second Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral services will follow at noon at the church with Rev. Ronald Harris as the eulogist, assisted by Rev. Dr. Ernest L. Reid, Jr. and Rev. Dr. Christopher Jackson. Entombment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
