CHI Memorial honored Andrew Scott, LPN, with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

A patient’s family nominated Scott for the compassionate care he gave to the patient and the family.

The nominee said, “It was Andrew’s genuine human compassion, and the sharing of [patient’s] suffering, that made such a huge difference in [the patient’s] comfort. Andrew’s care enabled [the patient] to remain optimistic, motivated and align his priorities towards wellness. It gave him strength and the ability to interact with those closest to him in his final days.

And it allowed him to meet God in peace and love, knowing his family was well cared for when he let go. [The patient] described Andrew as his Guardian Angel, fighting for his survival, advocating for his comfort and providing peace whenever Andrew was on duty. And Andrew was always there, even when he didn’t need to be: the night [the patient] passed, Andrew stayed beyond his shift for four more hours, giving everything he had to a grieving family facing catastrophic loss; he assisted other nurses late into the night; helped prepare [the patient] for leaving the room; and made the Honor Walk with us, nurses and staff lining the hallways. In moments of overwhelming emotion, Andrew felt it with us; we comforted each other and cried together.   There was such honor and dignity in the care he provided. Please accept this submission to award Andrew Scott (LPN) the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing in the form of clinical excellence and outstanding compassion. He absolutely led from the front, the same way [the patient] lived his whole life.”

Mr. Scott works on 5 South, a medical/surgical unit, at CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga, and has worked at CHI Memorial since August 2022.

Officials said, "CHI Memorial is pleased to partner with the DAISY Foundation to recognize the extraordinary difference nurses make in the lives of patients and co-workers. Nurses are chosen each month to receive this wonderful award that honors compassionate care.

"Honorees receive a bouquet of daisies, a certificate, a copy of her/his nomination letter and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch - hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.  The honoree's nursing unit also receives a cinnamon doughnut party, because it takes a team for a nurse to achieve his/her best.  Tasty Doughnuts generously donates the treats for this worthy cause."
