Chattanooga Mocs senior and Signal Mountain native Carson Johnson tied for ninth at the St. Augustine Amateur this weekend. The 3-day, 54-hole event was played at St. Johns Golf Club near the First Coast.
Johnson was the 18-hole leader after a 5-under 66 under difficult conditions. He followed with a 73 in round two before the final round saw the course bite back with a 79 to complete his impressive performance. His 3-day total was 5-over 218, with only seven golfers playing under par for the weekend.
It’s part of a strong run for Johnson. He earned Southern Conference Golfer of the Week honors on Oct. 30 after a career-best 2-under 214 to complete the Mocs fall schedule leading the program at the Steelwood Collegiate.
Johnson got the festive tournament run started for the Mocs. Next up is Ethan Whitaker at the Dixie Amateur December 19-22, while Garrett Engle and Braedon Wear tackle the field at the South Beach International Am over the same dates.
The Dixie is played at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. True to its name, the South Beach International is in Miami Beach at Miami Beach Golf Club while also playing Normandy Shores Golf Course in round two only.
Nearly the entire roster is in action during the Holidays. Appearances are also scheduled for the Orlando International Am, Thunderbolt, New Year's Invite and Jones Cup before returning to campus to prepare for the team's next outing in California in late January.
