Chattanooga Softball Splits In Frost Classic Openers

Chattanooga softball split a pair Friday afternoon at the 2024 edition of the Frost Classic. The Mocs beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi 4-2 to earn Reed his 1,200th career victory then fell 3-1 to Georgetown in the nightcap.
 
Chattanooga had three doubles in seven hits and had three RBI on five runs. Jayce Purdy was 3-for-6 with a double, Kaili Phillips was 1-of-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Taylor Long improved to 5-2 overall with a win over the Islanders. She struck out 14 batters in 7.2 innings pitched Friday and gave up two earned runs.      
 
Chattanooga head coach Frank Reed claimed his 1,200th career with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Reed, in his 23rd season at Chattanooga, is ranked 38th in the NCAA with 724 Division I wins. He led Chattanooga State for 11 seasons and recorded 476 wins.
 
CHATTANOOGA 4, TEXAS A&M CORPUS CHRISTI 2 Chattanooga scored three runs in the sixth inning to grab a 4-2 win over the Islanders for the Mocs seventh straight win and Frank Reed's 1,200th of his career.
 
A&M Corpus Christi scored two runs on a double in the third inning to get on the board first. Chattanooga cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly off the bat of Addy Keylon to score Kailey Snell.
 
The Mocs tied the game in the sixth on a double from Kaili Phillips and took the lead later in the same inning. Snell reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Phillips and Kendall Forsythe both came home to put the Mocs up 4-2.
 
Taylor Long sat down the side in the top of the seventh to secure the win. She went the final four innings, striking out eight and claiming her fifth win of the year.
 
Chattanooga had four hits and 10 strikeouts in the game.
 
GEORGETOWN 3, CHATTANOOGA 1 In game two Friday, the Mocs fell 3-1, snapping a seven game winning streak.
 
The Hoyas scored on a pair of home runs. In the third, Georgetown scored on a solo shot over the fence in center field. The second was a two-run hit that came in the top of the sixth after UTC tied the game in the fifth.
 
Kailey Snell led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a Jayce Purdy single to right field. Alyssa Orland hit a pinch hit sac fly to right field, driving in Snell to tie the game. Purdy advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a double-play got the Hoyas out of the inning.
 
The Mocs will take on Ohio at 12:30 p.m. at Frost Stadium Saturday and conclude the day with Valpo at 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale online at GoMocs.com or the Frost Stadium box office for $10 per day.
