Mocs Softball Split Openers In Frost Classic

The Chattanooga softball team beat Valparaiso 8-0 in six innings in the opening game Saturday afternoon and fell 7-0 to Ohio in the closer. Chattanooga moves to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Frost Classic.

The Mocs hit .340 Saturday with 16 hits that included a home run from Addy Keylon and a double and triple, UTC’s first of the year, from Kendall Forsythe. Chattanooga had seven RBI, drew six walks and had five sacrifice hits.

Forsythe went 5-of-7, driving in three runs and posting a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .714 on base percentage.
Anna Dovey, Addy Keylon, Kaili Phillips and Olivia Lipari each drove in a run.

Head coach Frank Reed used all five pitchers through both games. Izzy Alley picked up her second win in her third start for the Mocs

CHATTANOOGA 8, VALPARAISO 0 The Mocs started Saturday with a run-rule win over Valpo, beating the Beacons 8-0. Izzy Alley pitched four shutout innings and Alyssa Lavdis struck out five in the final two. Kendall Forsythe was 4-for-4 with three RBI in the win making the start at first.

Chattanooga got the scoring started in the first on a single up the middle on a 2-2 count by Kaili Phillips to score Camryn Cernuto who reached on a bunt single to lead off the game. Forsythe drove in Phillips from second on the Mocs first triple of the season to put UTC up 2-0.

With one out in the second, Addy Keylon drove her first home run of the season over the fence in right.

In the fourth, Kailey Snell sacrificed Cernuto and Keylon into scoring position. Olivia Lipari drove both home on a single through the left side to make it 5-0. Lipari made it to third on a wild pitch and was sent home on a single up the middle from Forsythe.

Snell started off the sixth with a single to centerfield and was joined on the bases by Lipari’s walk. Anna Dovey hit a pinch hit single up the middle to plate Snell and move Lipari to second. Forsythe’s RBI single to right center ended the game with Lipari scoring the Mocs’ eighth run of the game. 

The Beacons had just five hits, struck out seven times and stranded four runners. Kim Rodas was 2-for-3 for Valpo.

OHIO 7, CHATTANOOGA 0 Chattanooga fell behind early, giving up four runs to the Bobcats in the second inning. A fielding error on a sac bunt plated the first two runs. A pair of singles drove in the next two. The final three runs were scored on a wild pitch, a single and a throw down to second.

The Mocs tallied five hits against Ohio but stranded eight. Taylor Long got the start and struck out three in 1.2 innings while walking two and recording two earned runs. Peja Goold came on in the middle innings, getting four strikeouts in the 3.2 innings of work. Riley Lamb finished off the final 1.2 innings in the loss.
