McKenna Cavanaugh was named the Gulf South Conference indoor female athlete of the year as announced by the league on Monday. SHe helped lead the Lady Flames to their fifth straight GSC championship.
McKenna Cavanaugh posted the first of her two individual championships in the mile. She stopped the clock at 4:53.01 to win by one second and post a GSC Indoor Record.
Cavanaugh added her second title and the team's fourth of the day in the 3000-meter run. She hit the finish line at 9:57.31 to win by 2.42 seconds. Earlier in the year, McKenna Cavanaugh met the standard of 4:56.85 in the mile. Cavanaugh stopped the clock at 4:46.90 to finish second overall at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
On the men's side, Cale Kassen was named the Gulf South Conference Indoor Male Field Athlete of the Year. For his contributions during the championships, Kassen was named the Most Outstanding Overall Performer and Most Outstanding Track Performer.
Cale Kassen won the first of his two championships with a GSC Indoor Record high jump of 2.13 meters. Stine placed fourth after clearing 1.85 meters. Kassen's second championship came in the 60-meter hurdles where he won by 0.18 seconds with a time of 7.86 seconds. Earlier in the season, Kassen highlighted the Lee University men's track & field team competition at the South Carolina Garnet Invitational with two of the team's three new NCAA Division II Provisional Qualification marks.
Kassen was the event winner in both the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump. In the 60, he posted a time of 7.93 seconds to hold the top time in the preliminary round. Kassen improved his time in the final to win with a stoppage of 7.85 seconds to beat the provisional standard of 8.20 seconds. In the high jump, Kassen cleared 2.05 meters to bypass the provisional mark of 2.03 meters. He currently stands at No. 3 in Division II in the hurdles and 26th in the high jump. Kassen also finished second in the long jump with a measurement of 7.04 meters.
