Jerry Summers
In light of the local, state, national and international controversies in July 2024, it is time to lighten the rhetoric and interject some colorful cartoon lore, humor and even some political flavor to any readers of the split personality, Sunday printed paper, and the digital version owned by the good folks from Arkansas.
Having grown up (?) in the era of the “Adolph Och’s” predecessor to the New York Times, and “Mr. Roy's” News Free Press the cartoons did not always arouse the wrath of the readers such as that displayed in a recent Rant (July 14th), when the left wing politically left oriented “Doonsbury” cartoons allegedly was put on the conservative side of the editorial page of the surviving tabloid.
Blondie, Snuffy Smith, Gasoline Alley, Rex Morgan, Judge Parker, Dennis the Menace, Prince Valiant, etc. all provided humor and or intrigue to the paid viewers.
Today's “Pickles” provides a few laughs to the growing old problems of the elderly, “Mutts” appeals to the pet loving majority in Gig City, and the “Doonesbury” caters to the more liberal politically oriented generations.
(A chuckle, belly laugh, or cynical reaction under the colorful protection of the First Amendment of the freedom of speech clause of the United States Constitution without censorship is a special benefit of being an American, as well as being allowed to Rant.)
