UTC Receives Multiple College Of Distinction Accolades From National Higher Ed Resource

  • Monday, July 14, 2025
Colleges of Distinction, a national organization that honors higher education institutions for excellence in delivering exceptional student experiences and producing successful outcomes, has recognized the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 10 award categories.

UTC has been designated a 2025-2026 College of Distinction for undergraduate education and was recognized as both a top Tennessee and public institution.
The University also attained College of Distinction status for its business, education, engineering and nursing programs; for affordability and career development; and for its support of international students.

“Recognition from Colleges of Distinction affirms that UTC is delivering a student experience rooted in academic excellence and meaningful engagement—one that reflects our mission to develop talent, solve problems and serve as a strong community partner,” said Dr. Jerold L. Hale, UTC provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.

“We spend a lot of time and effort creating a positive environment—what we call the Mocs experience—and this distinction highlights our commitment to engaging students in the learning process. To me, this is a clear sign that our faculty, departments and staff across every division of the University are getting it right.”

Hale said UTC’s inclusion in the affordability category underscores the University’s ongoing commitment to access and value.

“This is recognition that—in comparison to other universities in the state, our peers and even nationally—we’re an affordable value for students,” Hale said.

Colleges of Distinction, founded in 2000, is a national higher education resource that recognizes institutions that meet high standards in teaching, retention, campus atmosphere and post-graduate success. To be named a College of Distinction, schools must demonstrate excellence in undergraduate education through high-impact practices that align with the organization’s four core distinctions.

According to its website, the selection process emphasizes engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes. Institutions are evaluated on student-centered criteria such as experiential learning opportunities, faculty-student mentorship, undergraduate research and support for career development.

Colleges of Distinction conducts in-depth research and interviews with academic leaders to identify universities that prioritize student-centered learning and real-world preparation. Rather than ranking schools against each other, the program recognizes institutions that create environments where students thrive academically and personally.
