Tom Brown, lifelong woodworker, will guide participants through the process of carving a wooden spoon at a workshop this Saturday at the Cohutta General Store, 317 Wolfe St. in Cohutta. There are two workshops, one from 10 a.m.-noon and one from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
During the four-hour small group workshops, participants will learn how to transform a log into a functional wooden spoon using simple hand tools. No previous woodworking experience is needed.
Participants will learn about the tools of the trade with an emphasis on safety. The class will cover how to use a hook knife, how to read the grain pattern of wood to determine how to carve, how to map out a spoon on a block of wood, and how to create a spoon.
The class is open to adults ages 18 and older; 14-17 if accompanied by an adult.
Cost for the workshop is $20, plus a $10 materials fee. Materials will include two hardwood spoon blanks and sandpaper. Participants will need to bring a sharp straight blade knife, such as a Morakniv or Sloyd knife. All other tools will be provided. Participants will have the option of purchasing a hook knife at the workshop. Advance registration is required.
To register, send name, address and phone number to tjb_buckeyeridgellc@yahoo.com or call 706-581-8025. To allow for individualized instruction, each workshop will be limited to six participants.
